Bursting out of my cocoon

As dawn rises, a beautiful butterfly could hear bustling noises from the street and chipping of the birds from the trees. It was happily fluttering its wings around the garden. Before the butterfly can enjoy its freedom, it needs to go through a metamorphosis. During its life cycle, a butterfly undergoes several changes in body form and appearance. The four stages of this metamorphosis are: egg, caterpillar, pupa, and butterfly. In the 3rd stage, the caterpillar needs to spin itself into a soft and silky cocoon to protect its pupa. Pupation may last weeks, months or even years. Make a guess what will it do before it transforms?

Before I provide you with the answer, let me share my story with you. I was an introvert since young. During my childhood days, I have developed a mindset that is; “Talk less, listen more”. Being an introvert, I listen more than I speak. I was timid and scared to speak up. There were times because of my character, I was misunderstood and for the worse, I was blamed for things that I never done. I realised that it is time for me to be heard.

An opportunity came along. I saw Singapore Polytechnic’s eFlyer introducing Toastmasters. Out of curiosity, I attended one of the introductory workshops. The proficient speakers were not only speaking effectively but also inspiring people around them. The charisma within them got me interested to find out more. Deep in my heart, I knew that this is the skill I want to learn.

There is an old saying; “The FIRST step is always the toughest.” I stumbled when I made my first maiden speech in the basic manual project. My hands were shaking and my voice was cracking. I heard voices, felt my fears and was perspiring as I spoke. The inner struggle within me was a big challenge for me. However, each time I fall, I pick myself up and try again. I kept telling myself that as long as I do not give up, I am sure even the most incompetent speaker like me will be able to master the speaking skills one day. The word “Failure” never crossed my mind. I just knew that I have not mastered the skill yet. Whenever I make mistakes, I will change as I learned; it gave me motivation and confidence to speak up more.

After a few years in Toastmasters, I have slowly walked out of my own cocoon, built my self-confidence and spoke with conviction. Toastmasters has made me understood the importance of people connections besides learning how to speak and listen effectively. By taking up different EXCO roles, it allows me to learn leadership and interpersonal skills as well. I was required to interact with a lot of people, getting contacts from them, arrange meetings etc to ensure the meetings were carried out smoothly each time. All these tasks are the learning blocks for me to understand and develop my skills. I kept in mind that struggling is an essential part of my growth experience. In fact, it is the struggle that causes me to develop my ability to communicate better.

I strived to apply what I learnt in Toastmasters in each day of my life. I have changed my negative thoughts into positive ones by changing “Why me?” into “How to do it” mindset. It makes me happier as a person. I am not only able to communicate and connect with my family and friends better these days but also I have widened my circle of friends now.

Here is the answer to my earlier question. Before the caterpillar could transform into a butterfly, it is supposed to STRUGGLE. The pupa’s struggle helps the butterfly to push its way through the tiny opening of the cocoon which in turn pushes the fluid out of its body and into its wings. Without the struggle, the butterfly would never be able to break free from the cocoon it has created and fly into freedom.

I have seen myself just like a caterpillar undergoing a metamorphosis over a period of time. Some people need weeks, months or even years to be transformed. It does not matter how long one person would need to transform as long as that person allows himself to break through the struggle. That person will be able to fly like the butterfly that he wish to be. Toastmasters journey is a learning ground equipping me with a pair of stronger wings…

The Impossible

IMPOSSIBLE…….. the word describing the change in me. To many people who knew me for more than ten years, they would say I was a very shy, timid and reserved person. When I was young, I would blush whenever I converse with people, especially with girls.

There was a period of time when I realized that I should not continue my life in this manner. I plunged myself into a sales career where I felt it was the best training ground to force myself to change. I begun to open up myself slowly knowing training can help me progress myself in my career. I further continue to participate in more sales and motivation courses.

In the year 2005, I found one of the most enriching and enjoyable training avenue known as Toastmasters International organized by the Singapore Polytechnic Toastmasters Club (SPTMC).

By learning the guided steps of public speaking, I began to realise that it is definitely POSSIBLE to train oneself to be a confident public speaker eventually. As my confident increases with the training I received with SPTMC, I even participated in our club contests and in return, I won many trophies which have now became my prize collection. Above all, learning public speaking with SPTMC helps me to improve not only my communication skills but also my listening skills. Today, I am a more confident person and have no fear communicating with anyone around me. At my own freewill, I even volunteered to be part of our club’s executive committee where it gives me a platform to learn to work as a team, at the same time to become a better leader. To me, Toastmasters movement is a complete self-improvement training ground where we share and learn to build our self esteem at our own pace.

No one in this world is impeccable but anyone in this world is changeable. Taking myself as an example, who was shy, timid and reserved 4 years ago, I felt I have been transformed to a new person that is confident and positive. My thanks to SPTMC. For all of you out there, simply take the first step to join SPTMC and you will be transformed from “I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E” to “I’m possible”.

Edwin Por, CC, CL is the 1st Runner Up in Humorous Speech Contest. His speech title was "Where! Where! Where is My Love" and not to forget Derek Wee, 2nd Runner Up with his speech title was "Roti Prata".

Edwin Por, CC, CL is also the 2nd Runner Up in Speech Evaluation Contest.

Chapter Meeting

We holds our regular chapter every 3rd Wednesday of the month. On 20th August, it will be our 39th chapter meeting.

A toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a friendly atmosphere. Members learn communication skills by working in the Competent Communication manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking assignment to instill a foundation in public speaking. Participants will learn skills related to use of humour, gestures, eye contact, speech organization and overall delivery.

There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another's presentation. This feeback process is a key part of the program success.

Surveys after surveys shows that presentation skills are crucial to success in the workplace. Many people pay high fees for seminars to gain the skills and confidence neccessary to face an audience. Toastmasters provides and option that is less expensive and held in high regard in business circles. This organization has been around for more then 84 years and offer an proven - and enjoyable - way to practice and hone communication and leaderships skills.

Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest.

Speech contest are an important part of the Toastmasters International education program. Speech contests provide an opportunity for proficient speakers to gain contest experince, and they provide interesting education programs for members and the public. They also allow those Toastmasters who are not participating in the contest to learn by observing proficient speakers.

The purpose of the Humourous Speech contest is; To provide an opportunity for speakers to improve their speaking abilities and to recognize the best an an encouragement to all. To provide an opportunity to learn by observing the more prodicient speakers who have benefited from their Toastmasters training. To recognize the value of humor in speaking.

The purpose of the Evaluation Contest is ; To encourage development of evaluation skills and to recognize the best as encouragement to all. To provide an opportunity to learn by observing the more proficient evaluators who have benefited from their Toastmasters training.

1. How can I join the Singapore Polytechnic Toastmasters Club?
You have to be a graduate of Singapore Polytechnic as the club is opened to alumni members only.

2. How much do I need to pay?
Membership fees is S$144 yearly plus a one time registration fee of S$60.

3. What happens at a typical Chapter Meeting?
Members get together to learn and develop their communication and listening skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. Through the different segments of a Chapter Meeting, members are exposed to real time, hands-on learning opportunities.

Table Topics session: Acquire impromptu speaking skills by learning to think quick on your feetPrepared Speech session: Hone existing and develop various speaking skills
